History of Marlborough

Celebrating 90 Years of Marlborough

First opened on 29th June 1936, Marlborough Primary School has been at the heart of the Isleworth community for nine decades.

Over the years, Marlborough has evolved alongside the community it serves, from being a primary school, becoming a senior school, amalgamating with other local schools, transitioning into separate junior and infant schools and ultimately returning to the thriving primary school we know today.

During the Second World War, the school played a vital role in the community, acting as an ambulance depot while continuing to host shows and comedy nights to keep spirits high.

In 1997, following a passionate campaign by pupils and parents to address overcrowded learning spaces, the school was rebuilt, marking the start of a new chapter.

Looking back across 90 years, it is clear that Marlborough’s values have remained constant. Achievements in sport, the arts and environmental initiatives have always been a priority and these are just some examples of what continues to shape school life today.

Each week, we celebrate our heritage through our “Past and Present” feature in assemblies, comparing school life then and now. This section will be regularly updated, so do take a look at what we have explored so far as we honour 90 years of Marlborough.

Marlborough during World War II

During the Second World War, Marlborough Primary School played a significant role at the heart of the local community. The school building was used as an ambulance depot, supporting the wartime effort while education continued under challenging circumstances. Shelter trenches were dug on the school grounds to protect pupils, staff and local residents during air raids. Despite the difficulties of war, Marlborough remained a gathering place for the community, hosting music and comedy nights, boxing matches and talent competitions to lift morale. A concert was also held in support of the Mayor’s Comfort Fund, raising money to provide essential supplies and comforts for sailors and soldiers serving abroad.

As part of Year 6’s history topic, The Impact of War, pupils have been analysing old newspaper articles to explore what life was like in our community during wartime. Through these primary sources, they discovered powerful headlines that highlight the important role Marlborough Primary School played locally. These articles have helped them reflect on how our school values were demonstrated then, just as they are today.

Past and Present - 90 Years off Marlborough

Nearly 50 years separates these photos, but the team spirit and determination of our female athletes is just as strong today as it was for the cup winners of 1977.

Thirty-one years ago, we campaigned for a better school. Today, that vision is a reality. Since joining us last term, Olive Dining has transformed our lunchtimes with fresh salad bars and nutritious hot meals - a world away from the car park treks of 1995!

From winning local competitions in 1996 to our monthly in-house Artist of the Month gallery today, our students' talent continues to shine! Whether it’s photography or sculpture, we love celebrating our pupils' hard work and creativity.

From the ‘Computer whizz-kids’ of 1999 to the Digital Leaders of 2026, leading the way in technology has been a goal of Marlborough through the decades. We loved seeing our current team continue this legacy of innovation at the Bett Show this week!
